Is it the greatest story of the Premier League era? This time last year, the Foxes looked to be headed for the Championship League. But, with a remarkable seven wins out of their last nine games, Leicester City managed to stay in the Premier League. When the start of the 2015/2016 season rolled around, no one expected that Leicester would amount to much. There was talk of Claudio Ranieri being the first Premier League manager to be sacked, and many predicted Leicester to get relegated at the end of the season. They have certainly proved all the critics wrong with their impressive display. With dreadful showings from Chelsea and Manchester United, and a very poor second half of the season from Manchester City, along with a typical anticlimactic season from Arsenal, the top of the table has been up for grabs. But no one would have suspected that Leicester would be the club at the top.
Leicester City have been superb, playing fast and unstoppable football. The team has been outstanding, with a few standout performers. Namely, Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez, and summer signing N’Golo Kante have all been extremely influential. Jamie Vardy broke Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s Premier League record when he scored a goal in 11 consecutive games. He is currently only behind Spurs’ Harry Kane in the race for the golden boot with 19 goals to his name. Mahrez has also had an outstanding season with 16 goals and 11 assists.
The whole team has been excellent and with the season coming to a close, unbelievably, Leicester remain at the top of the table, five points clear of second placed Tottenham. The question is whether Leicester can continue their excellent form and close out the season. Even if they were to lose the top spot, they are sure to get Champion’s League football next season. How incredible that a team can go from almost certain relegation candidates, to title contenders! It’s an amazing underdog story and even those who are neutral toward Leicester can’t help but root for them as they make history this season. Can they pull it off? Only time will tell!
